My Story
Some families go through hell and back when it comes to cancer, but none as tormented as the family I am riding for. Their kids ... not once, not twice but 3 times!
My friend, Pavol, his stepdaughter, Katie was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia when she was only 3 years old. It was a tough battle and things didn't look good but thankfully through a bone marrow transplant she survived and lived normally through to her 20's, had started university and the future was looking bright.
Then in the spring of 2021 her sister Brooke had some health issues and by the summer diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It was really rough, chemo had caused complications and it was touch and go. She too needed a bone marrow transplant which took place in April 2022, after a year of fighting the disease. Within 2 months she was considered cancer free, and I know just how elated Pavol and the family were. To have both girls go through cancer and come through the other side, they were overjoyed.
But cancer is an nasty disease and gave the family no time to rejoice. Around the time of Brooke's transplant in April 2022, Katie started to complain of stomach pains. Katie was diagnosed with a large ovarian tumour with Metastasis throughout her abdomen (stage 4.) I know Katie tried to fight, we followed her blogs and was amazed by her courage, her positive outlook and her bravery but sadly at only 25 years old she died on December 29, 2022.
I am riding to support my friend, I'm riding to support his family, I'm riding in memory of Katie and the honour of knowing her, and I'm riding for Brooke in the hope she stays cancer free. Please help me support this cause.
