My Story

2 Aug 2025

This August, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, over 1,700 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

My young friend Leah was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2023, just after her 11th birthday. This is the same cancer that Terry Fox had. This is Leah's story....

Hi my name is Leah buckler.

Just after my 11th birthday in 2023 I was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. I’d been having pain in my knee for a few months I loved track and field and figure skating so we thought it was overuse but when physiotherapy wasn’t helping I had an xray. it showed cancer in my lower femur.

I began chemotherapy in November and finished in August the following year. ( the same chemotherapy terry fox received there has been no new improvements in the protocol since then)

I was mostly admitted to the hospital during this time. And if it wasn’t for treatment it was for a fever. I named my iv pole Gary, i have mixed feelings about Gary now.

On January 18th 2024 I had the cancer removed with a surgery called rotationplasty. This seemed to give me the most mobility once I was able to get a prosthetic.

Once chemotherapy was over I ran the bell. I thought it would make me feel better but it didn’t.

Things did get easier eventually I returned to school in grade 7 bald and with crutches but I made it!

It was a hard transition learning to walk and socialize with peers again. The girls at the hospital had become my family and used to joke I was 11 going on 31.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.
